also, i know this has not much to do with the thai people, but im still a little shocked over the thai government actions recently, and blah blah blah. anywho, thats why i would choose bali over phuket.

Bali by a long ahot. I am actually going next month. Lots more to do in Bali and I think that it is considerably safer than Thailand. Its been a long time since there has been any terrorist activity in Bali.
And terrorism in Thailand is on a major up swing, expecially in the south.
