There is a deadly disease that has and still is sweeping nations across South East Asia. It’s now beginning to be known as the Asian bird flu. So what is it and how does it affect people? Well the Asian bird flu is a virus that is spread by birds, hence the name bird flu. It’s a type of influenza virus that can spread like wildfire when given the opportunity.

So you’re wondering how Asian bird flu is contracted by humans if it’s a strand of influenza that only affects birds? Well unfortunately, bird flu is like many other strands of influenza being that it has the potential to mutate into other strands when placed in the right environment. This of course has occurred many times and has resulted in catastrophic proportions on the human population.

Recent Breakouts Of The Asian Bird Flu

The most recent breakouts have occurred in South East Asia and more particularly Indonesia, where many people died in a very short period of time. Luckily modern medicine is far more adept at treating influenza viruses these days. If the same breakout had have happened back at the beginning of the 20th century many more people would have died and its potential to spread across countries would have been greater. This of course did happen several times nearly 100 years ago and many people lost their lives.

What Can We To Prevent Something Like The Asian Bird Flu From Occurring

Well first of all measurements are being taken to prevent poultry from becoming infected in the first place. Poultry farms are usually the beginning of any outbreak. Why? Well, poultry like chicken and ducks sometimes become infected by wild birds who of course contain an antibody that protects them from the Asian bird flu. This of course doesn’t mean they still can’t carry the virus and when a bird kept in captivity comes in contact with a carrying wild bird, it then becomes infected. That bird then passes it onto the rest of the birds on the farm and before you know it, there’s an epidemic.

If this happens, there is usually a mass culling of poultry to prevent any chance of Asian bird flu spreading any further. Unfortunately in many cases, infected chicken is sold to consumers and that’s where it can become a problem for people. The virus has the potential to mutate into a disease that harmful for humans and that can also be spread from human to human.

Light of the Gods on Bali’s Peaks

The chain of steps, cutting a narrow band through the damp green forest, rose above me. Sweat dripped from the tip of my nose; rustling and chattering in the undergrowth hinted at unseen monkeys and a cool, cloying mist rose from the rice terraces below. It was not long after dawn, and I was picking my way up the pilgrimage route to the highest station of the complex of temples known as Pura Lempuyang that stud the green flanks of the fractured volcano standing sentinel on Bali’s eastern promontory. Somewhere ahead of me, on the very pinnacle of the peak, was Pura Lempuyang Luhur, 1,060 meters above sea level and the eastern directional anchor of the Balinese compass. Some 1,700 steps lead to the temple, but I had long since lost count of how many I had still to climb.

My first view of the mountain had come in the lavender light of the previous evening. Traveling north by motorbike from Amlapura, the administrative capital of Karangasem, Bali’s most easterly district, Gunung Lempuyang and Gunung Seraya, two cleaved halves of the same upwelling of basalt, rose like bruised knuckles above a rumpled rug of rice fields.

Bali’s overdeveloped south might leave many newcomers wondering just whether the luscious tropical island of myth really exists, but in this wilder eastern region I found no lack of green vistas and volcanic views. The area is dominated by the mighty cone of Gunung Agung, the 3,142-meter linchpin of Bali. But this evening Agung was lost in the clouds, and I was more interested in its smaller neighbor, Lempuyang-Seraya, the double peak that once overshadowed Bali’s most powerful Hindu kingdom. Karangasem today is one of Bali’s poorest regions, with drought-plagued agriculture and little tourism income. But in the 19th century this terraced, volcanic territory was the seat of a mighty dynasty.

My first stop north of Amlapura was a pleasure garden laid out by the last king of Karangasem in 1947. Tirtagangga — the name means “Water of the Ganges” — was a place of clear pools and stepping-stones. A mildewed pantomime of statues — gurning demons, bug-eyed warriors, belching boars and writhing royal nagas — spilled rivulets from artfully hidden spouts.

After spending the night in a guesthouse a stone’s throw from the gardens, I woke at first light, and 30 minutes later was standing at the foot of that interminable flight of steps, bending their way out of sight toward the summit of Lempuyang.

The scattering of temples that make up the Lempuyang complex include one of Bali’s Kayangan Jagat, the nine directional temples that give the island its own unique set of cardinal points.

The rest of Bali seemed to fall away behind me as I climbed, and when I finally reached the little temple compound at the summit, it was drifting alone in the clouds. There were damp ceremonial umbrellas and altars wrapped in checked cloth. Shaggy palm trees rustled in the breeze. The temple was not totally deserted, though; a local man, Pak Arya, had spent the night meditating at the temple.

He told me that the name of this place — Lempuyang — was a contraction of two old Balinese words, “ lempu ” and “ hyang, ” and meant “the Light of the Gods.” As a mob of olive-colored monkeys emerged from the bushes and began a swaggering circuit of the temple, Pak Arya spun me a tall but tempting tale. When American astronauts on the first mission to the moon looked back on the earth behind them they saw an unexplained light shining from one spot — Lempuyang.

“The Light of the Gods!” said Pak Arya with a grin, warding off a monkey.

Light of the Gods aside, there was one brief glimpse of the light of day as I descended, passing white-clad pilgrims struggling up the steps: for mere seconds the clouds cleared and Lempuyang’s giant neighbor, Mount Agung, loomed to the west in a deluge of bright sunlight.

At the foot of the steps I climbed back into the saddle and took a back road, skirting the northern flanks of the mountain. Agung appeared again as I threaded my way through the fishing villages and dive resorts around Amed. The sea was dotted with bone-white fishing boats under triangular blue sails. In Bunutan village, I watched a crowd of men betting on cockfights in a shaded pavilion. The air was thick with the smell of clove smoke and feathers and wads of money passed hands after each bloody bout.

The road led on, bucking over promontories and dipping into shallow bays. To my right the twin peaks of Seraya and Lempuyang loomed in the clouds, while offshore the dark hills of Lombok rose.

At the height of their powers in the 18th century, the Karangasem kings crossed the strait and annexed Lombok, placing its Muslim subjects under Hindu rule. So it remained until the end of the 19th century when the Dutch appeared on the scene and wrested Lombok away, and then, not long after, conquered Karangasem itself.

Admiring the view as I rode, I took a wrong turn and ended up in a little hamlet of yellow dogs and fighting cocks. A man called Gede called me over, and before setting me back on the right road he plied me with roasted corn and sweet coffee.

The blue waters of the Lombok Strait lay below us. Gede is a farmer, though in this hard, eastern landscape there is not enough water to grow rice. All that grows here, he said, is the corn on which I was chewing. The people here have little cash and life is hard, so when foreign investors come sniffing out bargain plots for future villa developments, as they had recently begun to do, they take interest. But they are also wary, Gede said, and are doubtful about the merits of the kind of intense development seen in other parts of Bali. There are no luxury villas here — yet.

Bidding goodbye to Gede, I continued on my journey. To the right a mountain emerged from the clouds again — it was Seraya that I was looking up at, 100 meters taller than its temple-topped twin. The mountain stayed in view all the way to Ujung, the final point on my circuit of Bali’s easternmost peaks. This was another water palace, built in 1919 by I Gusti Bagus Jelantik, the second-to-last king of Karangasem.

The sun was slanting away to the west now, with soft light shimmering on the water of the pool and on the white marble of the central pavilion, a private chamber where the royals had once retreated from the eyes of the world. There were no fluttering princesses, only locals from nearby Amlapura, out for an afternoon jog around the pool.

I climbed a flight of steps to a skeletal folly of relief-covered marble. The water palace lay below me, white walls, Dutch shutters and Balinese friezes in a mass of green trees. And beyond, propping up a slab of milky cloud, stood the two-peaked massif that had been the fulcrum of my journey, Lempuyang-Seraya.

Spiritual Tours in Bali – Vacation Package Tips Not to Miss
By Karen A. Newton

Before embarking on a Bali tour it is wise to explore the wide variety of Bali vacation packages available today.

What are you looking for in your spiritual tour to Bali?
Bali has a strong cultural heritage with amazing temples found throughout the island. Temple ceremonies occur every day in Bali. You may have heard it referred to as the “island of 10,000 temples”. This is a reflection of the numerous temples found in Bali – spirituality runs deep and strong in all aspects of life here. If you are looking for a spiritual experience then be sure not to miss visiting these temple ceremonies.

What To Look For
Many Bali vacation packages include accommodation, partial meals and a variety of activities. A spiritual tour should involve some type of spa treatment, meditation and yoga. As far as sight seeing, one shouldn’t miss the most beautiful temple in the world – Tanah Lot Temple. Situated high on a cliff over the ocean, the view is absolutely outstanding. Another temple worth mentioning is the Besakih Temple. It has often been referred to as the “Mother of all Balinese Temples”. It actually consists of five temples (a sacred Mandala). If you are exploring Bali vacation packages be sure to try and experience the Barong Dance. A Balinese dance portrays how chaos and destruction compete with each other. Make sure to check with your hotel as many hold performances weekly.

Eat Pray Love
If you have ever read “Eat, Pray, Love.” by Elizabeth Gilbert then you know how she experienced the spirituality of Bali to the fullest. A spiritual tour in Bali that encapsulates her experiences and focuses on changing your life would be essential when looking at Bali vacation packages. In Elizabeth’s book she walks us through her quest for spiritual healing, allowing us to share her journey along the way.

Where To Stay
As for where you want to visit, popular choices in Bali are Ubud and Nusa Dua. In Ubud you will find many shops and galleries, spiritual dances and the monkey forest (a must see!). Also there are the Botanical Gardens, terraced rice paddies and many crafts and art specialties throughout the Balinese villages.

Nusa Dua Bali is home to several five star resorts and choosing to stay in Nusa Dua is a popular choice among many. If you are budget conscious, then you might prefer to stay in Ubud. Nusa dua hotels and resorts are geared more towards those seeking luxury. Many of the resorts even have their own private beaches. Wherever you end up staying you are sure to experience how beautiful and peaceful Bali truly is.

Saw an article on hermit crabs and it reminded me of the time when we had a glorious Christmas Bali vacation a few years ago. We had a lot of fun, especially when we scoured the beaches in Bali and collected quite a few bags of shells…

But first to the article that brought all these memories back. It says here that…

“Hermit crabs are fun pets to care for in your home. They used to be reserved for souvenirs from seaside vacations, but now they can be bought almost anywhere. They make wonderful starter pets for kids. They make a great alternative to the more traditional gerbils or hamsters, and they have a much longer lifespan than goldfish! Contrary to what you might expect if you are new to hermit crabs, it is possible to play with them, and they do have little personalities of their own. Do you think hermit crabs may make a great pet for you? Here are some helpful hints to get you started…”

Well, I never thought that a hermit crab could be a pet. But hey, you never stop learning. Because the article continues…

“Before you get your crab, you need to get the basic equipment and supplies in place. First, they will need an aquarium for their house. Forget those teeny, tiny cages you see at the shops by the beach; hermit crabs really need a ten-gallon aquarium to be comfortable. If you are getting more than one crab, obviously you will be a bigger aquarium. A pet shop will be able to advise you on the best size for the number of crabs you will be housing. Make sure the aquarium has a snug fitting lid so your little friends do not make a run for it! Place a heating pad under the tank to keep your crabs feeling nice and tropical…”

OK, I think I get the picture. And it’s true. You want them to feel at home in your tropical aquarium. Because, what happened those few years ago was that when we got home from our vacation in Bali, we were quite jet lagged, and fell asleep almost as soon as we got back. Around 1am we woke up, couldn’t sleep anymore and decided to have breakfast and clean all the shells we brought with us.

Michael lovingly scrubbed them and arranged them on a large copper plate that we then placed on the coffee table in our lounge.

You know what it’s like when you come back from a long haul flight, can’t sleep but are still sleep deprived. You sit there, lost in thoughts, memories from your fantastic Bali vacation floating in and out of consciousness, admiring the pyramid of shells from the Bali beaches in the middle of the coffee table…

…and suddenly you notice one shell is moving!!!

Crickey! Are you dreaming? Are you awake? Yes, it was true! One shell slowly made its way down the pyramid of shells. I’m sure you’ve guessed… yes, it was a hermit crab that made this particular shell its own.

Now, I had a dilemma. What was I going to do with this tropical sea creature in the middle of an English winter? To go to Brighton beach and drop it into the freezing water would be cruel. The little hermit crab would die. Probably from home sickness. Brighton beach isn’t quite the beach in Bali, is it?

Well, to cut a long story short, somehow we disposed of the poor little hermit crab. The mountain of shells sat in our living room until a year later we packed everything up and moved to the antipodes…

Indonesia, a Country of thousands of beautiful and exotic Islands, that spark off your imagination with thoughts of fine sandy beaches, huge temple complexes, great diving and the giant dragons of Komodo. The islands of Indonesia are spread over a vast expanse of ocean and technically speaking is divided by two Continents.

Some parts of the Country can be as different from each other as black is from white. The hustle and bustle of the modern capital Jakarta is like another planet when compared to the traditional Papuan tribes of the Baliem Valley. Jakarta – Not only is it the largest City in the Country, Jakarta is also the heartbeat. Indonesian’s from all over the archipelago come to the City to try and find their fortune or just to survive. The face of the City is constantly changing due to the construction of new skyscrapers, shopping malls and hotels.

Jakarta is mainly a business and political City and not really a tourist destination, but the older colonial parts of the City are very interesting and the museums have a lot of fascinating exhibits.

Jakarta, like you would expect, is the most expensive place in Indonesia, as well as the most polluted and most congested. It can be very hard to cope with all of the hustle, dirt, crime and cost, but if you can you will find an exciting City with plenty to offer.

Kota – This is the old Town of Batavia, which was the capital of the Dutch East Indies and the best example of the colonial era in Indonesia. Though much of the old town has been destroyed or demolished over the years, some of the old Colonial buildings are still in active use, and the area has a definite Dutch feel to it.

The centre of the old Town is the pebble stone square known as Taman Fatahillah and this is the key to being able to orientate yourself around the sights of the old Town. The canal of Kali Besar is one block to the west of the square and runs alongside the Ciliwung River.

This was a very prosperous area and on the west bank are some of the high class homes that date from the eighteenth Century.

The Chicken market bridge is the last remaining drawbridge from the Dutch era, it is at the north end of the Kali Besar. Buses always come by on their routes and the city train also has a stop here.

Jakarta History Museum – This museum is housed in the old town hall of Batavia, which is on the south side of Taman Fatahillah. It is a well built building, which was originally constructed in 1627 and added to in the early 1700s. It was from here that the Dutch administered their colony, and the cities law courts were also here as well as their main prison compound.

It contains plenty of heavy, carved furniture from the colonial, as well as other memorabilia from the Dutch period. Open, 9am till 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 1,000Rp Wayang Museum – This museum is also on the Taman Fatahillah, and has a great assortment of Wayang puppets. It also has examples of puppets from other Countries like Cambodia, China and India.

This building was formerly the museum of old Batavia and was built in 1912 on the site of the former Dutch church which was demolished in 1808 as the
Dutchman “Daendels” plan to rid the City of its unhealthy areas. In the downstairs courtyard, there are memorials to previous governors who were buried on site. Open, 9am till 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 1,000Rp

Fine Arts Museum – Built in the 1860s, the palace of Justice building is now the Fine arts museum. It has a nice collection of contemporary paintings from prominent artists. They also have some ceramics on show from Chinese items to Majapahit offerings. Open, 9am till 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 1,000Rp

Gereja Sion – This church was built in 1695, and is the oldest Church in Jakarta. It is on Jl Pangeran Jayakarta near the Kota train station. The exterior of the Church is actually pretty plain but inside copper chandeliers, the original organ and the baroque pulpit makes it very appealing. Though thousands of people have been buried here there are very few tombs left remaining.

Sunda Kelapa – Just a 10 minute walk from the Taman Fatahillah, the old City port of Sunda Kelapa is full of wonderful Macassar schooners and the brightly coloured sails of these boats make for great viewing. The ships are still a vital means of transporting goods to outlying Islands.

Guides hang around the docks and for a few thousand rupiah will show you around and tell you some insightful stories. You can also take a ride out to the offshore fish market for around 5,000Rp. Admission, 250Rp to the dock area.

Maritime Museum – This is an old VOC warehouse that was built in 1645 and is by the entrance to the Sunda Kelapa. It has examples of Indonesian crafts from around the ages and has photos of the voyages from Europe to Jakarta. The building itself is well worth the visit and the lookout posts are part of the old City wall.

Just before the entrance to the museum proper, is the old watchtower that was built in 1839, it has brilliant views over the harbour. Opening hours are hit and miss, so try to find the caretaker.

National Museum – This museum, constructed in 1862, is considered the paramount museum in Indonesia, and one of the finest in South East Asia. It has a huge ethnic and relief maps of Indonesia on which you can track your travels. The museum has a variety of different cultural displays that show a diverse collection of clothing, instruments, model houses and religious items. In addition the museum has a fine collection of Chinese ceramics that even date back to the Han dynasty of the third Century.

The museum is sometimes known as the Elephant house due to the giant bronze elephant that was a gift from the King of Thailand, and that now stands outside. Open, 8.30am till 2.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission: 750Rp. Guides are around who can conduct tours in various different languages.

National Monument – This 130 metres high monument stands over Merdeka square and is Jakartas chief landmark. The construction was started in 1961 but was not finished until 1975, when it was officially opened by President Soeharto. At the base is the National History Museum which tells the story of the Indonesian struggle for independence. On national holidays and at the weekends the queues can be long. Open, 9am till 5pm, daily. Admission: 600Rp or 3,100Rp which includes a ride to the top.

Lapangan Banteng – Just east of Merdeka square is this nineteenth century colonial square. It has some of the best examples of Dutch colonial architecture in the whole of Jakarta. The Catholic Cathedral was built at the turn of the twentieth Century, and is opposite the principal place of worship for Jakartas Muslim community, the Istiqlal Mosque. To the east of the square is the Supreme Court that was built, along with the Ministry of finance, in 1809 by that man “Daendel” to replace those buildings torn down.

On your Bali vacation, there’s more to do than soaking up the sun on the beach, shopping, or seeing the sights. If you want some adventure, here are a few suggestions for activities, and if you’re not quite sure what to do, try them all. Your Bali vacation package will include some of them. Just ask.

Diving and snorkelling are of course the most logical activities, and that’s not just because the sea is lovely and warm, it’s also because you can say hello to spectacular marine life in between the corals and underwater caves.

Lovina Beach, for example, has a calm coral reef area where it’s safe to teach your children to snorkel. Or just off the East coast, Ceningan Island is fantastic for snorkelling beginners because the currents are not too strong.

If you’re an experienced diver, don’t miss a dive off the East coast, or dive amongst the sheltered coral reefs off the South coast and marvel at the vast variety of fish and corals. Be aware, though, of the strong under currents.

Bali beaches are known for their waves, so surfing and body boarding are definitely a must. kuta is amongst the most famous surfer’s paradise, and it’s possible to get surfing lessons from surf schools.

While you’re in Kuta, visit Bali’s only waterslide park. Amids lush tropical gardens, you slide for over 1 km, a childrens’ delight. For the more sedate adult visitor, there are great restaurants where you can relax and restore your equilibrium.

Only to get the adrenalin rushing through your body again on a white water rafting adventure in the 8 km stretch of the Ayung River.,Telaga Waja River, and Unda River, and enjoy awesome waterfalls and spectacular drops on some of the best river runs.

Ah, water isn’t really your thing? Here are some great land-based activities you can do on your Bali vacation.

Get off the beaten track on a bicycle and go on a guided excursion through mountain trails.

Or perhaps climbing a mountain is more your thing? There’s the day trip to reach the top of Mount Batukaru, or up to 6 hours to clime Bali’s highest mountain, Mt Agung.

And then of course there’s the Elephant Safari Park in Taro where you can watch Sumatran elephants or take a ride in the Elephant Taxi and feel like being in one of the Arabian night tales.

The Bali Safari and Marine Park houses yet more animals, such as orang-utans, leopards, the white Indian tiger, even alligators and camels.

These are just a few of the many things to do on a Bali vacation. You will discover many more once you’re there. And I’m sure you will always remember the awesome vacation you had in Bali.

INGREDIENTS OF INDONESIAN DISHES

Indonesia dishes are amongst the most delicious in the world, to make Indonesian dishes we need a lot of ingredients. But sometime we have a problem to find or to know ingredients we need to make Indonesian dishes.

Have the following ingredients on hand in your pantry to make it easier to prepare Indonesian-style dishes. Most ingredients can be found in your local supermarket or greengrocer. Some of the specialized ingredients can be found in Asian Food stores.

These is some of the following ingredients of Indonesian dishes:

-	Capsicum: Also known as red or green peppers.

-	Capsicum:From the candleberry tree, these nuts look like macadamia nuts and taste like Brazil nuts. Available from Asian Food strores.

-	Cardamon: Spice from the ginger family. Seeds are purchased whole, either in or out of their pods, or grounds.

-	Chillies: Small red chillies are the hottest. The larger red chillies are milder and green chillies are milder still. Seeds are often discarded as they are the hottest part of the chilli..

-	Coconut Cream: Thick white liquid that rises to the surface when coconut milk is left to stand.

-	Coconut Milk: This is not the juice from the inside of the fresh coconut but the liquid extracted from the white flesh.

-	Coriander: Indonesians use only the seed of the coriander plant, not the leaves or roots.

-	Cumin: An aromatic spice with a pungent flavour, seeds are available whole or ground.

-	Egg Noodles (fine, dry): looks like fine spaghetti which has been wound into a small bundless.

-	Ginger: Fresh ginger root is recommended, rather than dried. Indonesians also use laos and galagal which give a similar flavour and are occasionally available fresh from Asian Food stores.

-	Palm Sugar: Dark brown sugar made from the juice of the coconut palm flower. Sold in hard blocks, cut off required amount and crush it. Available from Asian Food stores.

-	Peanut Oil: A light oil used extensively in Indonesian cooking. Coconut oil is also used.

-	Rice Flour: Is finely ground white or brown rice and often used as a thickener.

-	Shrimp Paste(terasi): Extremely pungent, salty paste, sold in jars. Also available in hard blocks, use sparingly.

- Soy Sauce (kecap): Light soy sauce which is thin and salty. Kecap manis is dark soy sauce which is thick and sweet.

That is some of the following ingredients that we can use when we make Indonesian dishes. To learn more about the Indonesian dishes recipes, please visit: http://recipes-idea.blogspot.com, good luck for all of you guys.

There are currently just 42 sightings of Mega Mouth Shark on record to date, two of which have been from the remote island of Pulau Weh in Aceh, northern Sumatra. This volcanic isle represents the beginning of Indonesian territory to the west, the start of archipelago that spreads through 17,000 islands and the meeting point of the Indian Ocean and the Andaman Sea. The deep oceanic trenches that surround the island bring nutrient rich waters which in turn attract ocean giants such as mantas, whale sharks, mola mola and it seems the mega mouth shark.

On the 13th of March 2004 the first known sighting was made by a Dutch couple who own a dive centre at Gapang Beach on Pulau Weh. The couple spent many years diving in Indonesia and came across the island whilst backpacking throughout the region. The specimen washed ashore and after some confusion and was later identified; this was the second to be recorded in Indonesia and only the 21st to date worldwide. An earlier sighting was made in Manado, North Sulawesi but it rapidly swam off before any photos could be taken. On the 8th of September 2005 there was another sighting around Pulau Weh on a deep wreck dive on the Sophie Rickmer. At 50m a pair of Lumba Lumba Divemasters watched as it passed before descending into the deep. Unfortunately neither diver’s had a camera to record this rare occurrence.

Very little is known about the migratory habits of the mega mouth although it is known from Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the distribution of sightings are more common in territories between Indonesia and Japan and also on the western coast of America. Typical characteristics include a blackish brown coloration, a wide purplish tongue with a silvery tinge on both sides and of course a bulbous head from which it gets its name.

Diving in Indonesia has long been known to offer the rarest of encounters, and even if you don’t make it to be one of the lucky few to spot a mega mouth the island of Pulau Weh is surely worth a visit.
