Which out of the 2 multi-site holidays would you pick….opinions please?

It is for our honeymoon in early March 2010

We want somewhere where there is lots of things to do and see with activities etc as opposed to just beaches and lounging around!

** Hongkong (3nights) and Bali (Seminyal Area) 5nights and Bali (Ubud Area) 5 nights **

** Hongkong (3nights) and Thailand (Chang Mai) 5 nights and the 5nights in the best relaxing/most beautiful area where we can do day trips by boat to other islands** (Please let me know which place you think is best as a base for visitng the islands)

Also are the number of nights enough for each place?

I have friends who went to Thailand and very much enjoyed it. My comment would be to make sure you schedule a few days of relaxing down time when you return from your honeymoon, friends of mine did 2 weeks in Hawaii and had 2 days to recoup from travelling afterwards and they wished they had a little more time.

How dependable is the Bali Post office?

I would like to send out many small packages worth about $50 each via registered mail from Bali.
Obviously the value would not warrant the cost of EMS or FEDEX.
Is the system for registered mail reliable?
One time I sent a test package from the PO in Ubud to my address in Thailand and it arrived quickly but there was no internationally trackable bar code number on it as is normal in most countries, even places like india.
They didnt even have a postage printer they had to put about 20 stamps on the package!
Would the post office in Denpasar have a more modern system in place?
Can you estimate delivery time to UK or USA?

I haven’t tried registered mail from Indonesia to outside countries yet, but I know when I use the Express shipping option it has been fairly fast and reliable. I have also sent from Bali to Jakarta, Bali to Kalimantan, etc. Haven’t had a problem with it yet, except for breakables. That being said, when I receive mail in Indonesia, I’ve had LOADS of problems. Packages missing/stolen by post office staff, things missing from boxes, etc. Likewise my friends.

I have never seen them use bar codes for anything. They still use a manual mode of stitching the rice bag covers over the boxes as well. Pretty primitive at the post office here.

The process I have followed in Bali is:

* I always box whatever I’m sending myself, at home/in my hotel. I’ve had instances where I’ve let them do it and the stuff usually arrives broken. They have no idea how to properly pack.
* I use Express service.
* I always stick around until the package is completely wrapped up. I don’t trust them after having so many things go missing.
* I write the address, the receiver’s phone number AND my address and 2 personal phone numbers on the box and the cover they put on it. That way there are no excuses later if somebody absconds with it.
* I make sure all the postage/shipping labels are affixed before I leave the post office.
* I make sure I have the copy of the forms I’ve filled out so I later have proof of sending the package.

Regarding the post office in Denpasar, I would hope they’re more modern, but wouldn’t hold my breath. I usually go to the post office in the parking lot of Bintang supermarket in Legian/kuta. They’re open most of the time and it’s easier than visiting Denpasar in the traffic.

Delivery time for international post using Express: I’d give it 2 weeks maximum.

If sending by Express domestically from Bali to Jakarta for example, it’s about 3-4 days.

Where to visit on in Bali, Indonesia?

I live in France and am going to Bali at the end of July for 15 days.
I’m travelling alone and am interested in seeing beautiful beaches, mountains or cultural sites.
I’m not that interested by Kuta for example. I think I’d rather visit Gili and Ubud. What are the nicest places to visit in Bali?

P.S. Hotel reccommendations are welcome (25 euros per night / 40 AUS$)
Gabby: I’ve already checked out a few places on the internet, middle range around 40 dollars a night, you’ve obviously never been to the place to say that. Even in Paris, you can find hotels at 40 dollars!! SO I think that Bali shouldn’t present a problem for budget hotels…

Wonder if you do know that Gili islands is located off Lombok, it is not off Bali. You would need to a transport to Padang Bai for a ferry to Lembar, Lombok. Once in Lombok, another ferry to Gili..

If you are interested in beautiful beaches, mountains & just sights.. There is plenty of places for you to visit in both Bali & Lombok..
For beautiful beaches in Bali,
1- Kuta (its a little too crowded, but beautiful sunset & fine soft sands)
2- Lovina (secluded black sand beach, option to go for a morning dolphin sighting with the locals.)
3- Dreamland (a beach off the south of Bali, get directions from a local on how to get there.)
In Lombok,
1- Senggigi (a quiet beach near the captial Mataram, not possible to surf here.)
2- kuta (surf beach, almost like Bali- Kuta. But quiet & unspoilt.)

If looking to climb some mountains in both Bali & Lombok,
1- Mt Batur (day trek, it real beautiful & cold when you do the sunrise trek)
2- Mt Agung (day trek)
3- Mt Rinjani (3days/2nights trek, for ease of arrangments. Try engaging the services of Lombok Network for the trek.)
For both Mt Batur & Mt Agung sunrise trek, a lot of ‘tour-booth’ in Bali would be able to provide that. Just remember to bargain over the price.. if you are interested, let me know.. Would be able to ask a friend to provide discounts..

You are looking for nice mid-range places in Kuta or other places?
If in Kuta/ Legian, would recommend couple of nice locations;
1- Bamboo Bed & Breakfast Legian.

My Bali plans: does it sound good?

Hello everyone. Well after tons and tons of researching, I have finally decided on plans for our (me and my bf) Bali trip next week. Normally we hate planning ahead and only book the 1st or 2nd nights but we know, from friends, that Bali isn’t that easy to just drive around and pick a place and stay there (like Thailand’s islands). Plus, I want to do a little research and have things a bit less stressful. Does this sound like a good tentative plan. Please comment if you’ve been to these places, areas, or I’m missing something. Any help would be appreciated. (we want to go to party, shop, relax, dive, snorkel and have a good time together.)

Day 1-2 – Nusa Dua (Ellies hotel)
Day 3-4 – Lovina (Bali Paradise hotel)
Day 5-6 – Amed (Bayu Cottages or go up to Menjangan island if it’s booked)
Day 7-8 – Ubud (Nick’s Pension)
I wanted to get as much feel and difference as possible in such a short time. Thanks again

Seems fine to me, but could also slip in some time at kuta Beach if you like shopping and night life.

bali travel need last minute adivce from expert!!?

am and my partner are going to bali for just 8 days, and booked hotel in jimbaren(one night), kuta (two nights) nusa du a (four nights), we wanna see ubud, lovina, and hopefully some experienced advice from you. just wonder how long is the travel time (bus/taxi) from kuta to jimbaren, from kuta to ubud, to lovina, to nusa dua? we are trying to fit a good time scheme before head off..your advices are highly valuable to us, so thank you!

Have been to Bali a couple of times. Found Jimbaren Bay and Ubud to be really good. Didn’t like Kuta or Nusa Dua so much. Kuta is crowded,dirty and chaotic (but cheap). Nusa Dua is very artficial and touristy but more expensive. I think Jimbaren Bay was less than half an hour away from Kuta. Ubud was more than one hour. I don’t know about Lovina. You are moving around a lot of places in only 8 days. Have you thought of doing 6 days by the beach and 2 in Ubud?

bali in january next yr is decided BUT…i’ve a problem with the number of days to be spent in bali…?

my friend and i plan to stay in kuta AND ubud..a bit of fun+sand+nightlife+shopping as well as rest&relax+away from the crowd days ..so with suggestions from friends we plan to stay in both places..

but we don’t know how long should we spent in kuta and ubud each…any suggestions???

It’s gonna be your 1st time in Bali? Once you’re there, you’ll love it & will never forget it

First, i would suggest you to stay around 2-3 nights in Ubud. Ubud will offer you natural living in Bali. I like the atmosphere of Ubud, cozy one, peaceful and i supposed you’ll love it too. Don’t forget to go to ‘Bebek Bengil Resto’ (Bebek Bengil means Dirty Duck), quite expensive for a portion of a fried duck, but it’s worthy. And also the place is very nice, for you can take lunch outdoor in the middle of a rice field.
There are some place of interest around Ubud area:
- Monkey Forest
- Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave)
- Kecak Dance
- Sukawati (Traditional market)
- Bali Bird Park & Reptile Park
- Bali Zoo Park

And for kuta, as my opinion, you better stay there at least for 3 nights, but more is better. Because there are many more of places you can explore in Kuta rather than Ubud. And Kuta will gives you more easier access to go any other places in Bali.

Hey, don’t forget to take ‘Sate Penyu’ (Turtle Sate) in Kuta area, it’s a famous one in Bali… and also it’s another fun & cheap way to take a delicious traditional food
Try to find a local guide/people and ask for the location.
