I want to know about Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. Is it a hill station or beach?

How’s is Ubud for a honeymoon. Renting a villa…is it a nice idea?

It’s a gorgeous little town, full of stunning, temples, markets, little shops and great retaurants and bars. Oh and the monkey forest! I adored it, possibly my highlight of Bali. We were there as part of a several month honeymoon travelling round SE Asia and spent over a month in Indo – Bali (brilliant) Lombok (not so!) Gili Islands (very chilled) and eastwards (remote) across to Komodo.

I have to say in all honesty, much as I loved Bali, it does not have the best beaches for that part of the world. The Gilis were the prettiest but there’s not a lot going on, perfect if you just want to relax but see little else.

Ubud is excellent for a few days and a good base for seeing the rest of Bali. Oh and it is only 1-2 hours drive at most from beaches / airport, not several hours.

If you are set on going to Bali for say 2 weeks, I’d get a luxury hotel down in the South for a few days, do a small island (Lembongan?) for a few days and Ubud for a few more days. You’ll have time to move about a bit and really see the island but please don’t go all that way without visiting Ubud!

  2. It’s a hill station, several hours drive North of Kuta/Denpasar area and several hours drive West from the East coast. 15 – 20 years ago it was village atmosphere (so not the tradition colonial hill station) but lately it is a big tourist zone. Google it. There are literally 1000’s and 1000’s of sites with tonnes of info. Start at http://www.wikitravel.org.
It’s a nice place for honeymoon, but I think that Lembongan, Menjangan or one of the Gilis would be nicer.

  4. Ubud is nice. But no beach. It is the cultural centre of bali.

For honeymoon got to Jimbaran beach or Nusa Dua. You get good deals on latestays.com (If you book less than 2 weeks in advance)

  6. Ubud is a remarkable town in the middle of the island of Bali. For more than a century, it has been the island’s preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music. While it once was a haven for scruffy backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians, Ubud is now a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors and connoisseurs. Famous names walk its busy sidewalks everyday. Elegant five star hotels and sprawling mansions now stand on its outskirts, overlooking the most prized views in Bali. Nonetheless, Ubud is still popular with backpackers, mystics and all the finest fringe elements of global society. Ubud is not "ruined". Its character is too strong to be destroyed. It still draws people who add something; people who are actively involved in art, nature, anthropology, music, dance, architecture, environmentalism, "alternative modalities," and more.
